Steering box 1998 model
« on: May 08, 2019, 04:07:58 pm »
Hi guys

Very new to all of this. Just curious to know more info about the steering box for the 1998 Lada Niva model? Can it be fixed or must it be replaced? Is it better to replace than to fix? And if theres no replacements in SA, whats the alternative options? And also, where can i get the parts and other lada parts?

Also, i'm based in CPT.

There are NO new righthand steering boxes left in the factory. Ventz in Pietermartizburg had one or two left(2014 was when I last checked with him) There is one in private possession from an estate sale..

The boxes can be repaired provided you catch it early before the worm is to badly worn.

Parts are available fr9m Russian ajd Ukrainian suppliers.

Riaan de Wet in Kraaifontein may have the bearings to replace.

Remember to do the idler arm on the left at the same time.

Thanks Spikes.

If i can manage to source a steering box, is the 1.6 any different to the 1.7?

There are 2x different types of steering boxes,

one has the long worm shaft the other a short worm shaft

check near the brake pedal to see.

other than that there is no difference, change from long to short was around 1997

My Lada runs on grace from God, and breaks due to my failings.
