Anyone have a flywheel laying around?
« on: July 17, 2016, 08:58:50 pm »
Hi LOCSA,

Been a while since checking in. I have gone a little gung-ho and stripped all the mechanical components on Fergie in the last few months, when I removed the block and gearbox I noticed my flywheel is a little worse for wear, anyone happen to have one I can take off their hands?

Also, does anyone know if you can find the clutch release bearing in SA, I am not looking for a whole new clutch, but the retaining clip on the bearing is broken on the one end and waiting 6 weeks for it will slow me down a bit. Want to have her running by September for the gathering.

Cheers

Wesley

Regarding the flywheel
Firstly I would recommend getting a courier service to move the parts from one of the guys on the forum. Courier services are about R 150 door to door so it is definitely worth getting hold of the forum “suppliers” first.  I can definitely recommend Ventz on this one.
If there’s no joy from the forum there is a guy in KZN who is stripping his for spares and he may have a flywheel. The link is:

If you can’t find it immediately there are companies that are able to surface weld and resurface an old flywheel. Guys like these may be able to help.

These guys may be a bit more expensive as they make new ones:

Regarding the thrust bearing:
Not sure if the bearings are the same for all models. If the release/thrust bearing has a bearing number on it they can normally be sourced by a local bearing supplier. Generally if it does have a number an SKF, Timken or FAG will fit but you may have to phone a few places to find them. If you have the bearing in hand, and it is convenient, take the unit in to Bearing man and see what they come up with. Just don't tell them it's for a Lada otherwise it’s the standard answer """"We don't stock spares""""! Plead ignorance and let them measure it up and see if they can find it. I regularly do this for my wife’s vehicle and it really works as the guys will generally find a part!

Hope it helps. Let us know how it goes and if there are updates.

In spite of all their friends could say,
On a winter's morn, on a stormy day,
In a Sieve they went to sea!...

I do have one, but I need to dig deep to get hold of it. Could send it free of transport cost to Germiston by the end of this week.

R200.00, if you are interested.

If you interested in getting OEM parts, there is currently a bulk order open - http://ladanivaza.co.za/index.php?topic=1086.msg7896#new

Parts should arrive in Gauteng by late August as the order closes on 31 July.

Danie, have a look to see if you can find it. Wesley has a few chipped teeth on his. I'll collect on his behalf.

Hi Wesley / Andre,

I managed to find the flywheel, but when I had a proper look at it I realized that it also has a broken tooth :

Sorry about this, I obviously didn't have a proper look at the teeth before  :-[

Hi Danie, thanks for your trouble. I believe my unofficial secretary Andre has been in touch. Yours is still in better shape than mine.

Laat weet as ek eendag n klip uit jou pad kan rol.

Hi Wesley,

Good idea. I never tried that, but if the gear get slightly heated with an acetylene torch, it should come off fairly easy. Only half of the tooth is broken, the other side is stll in perfect condition.

I would still try to get the broken teeth welded though. The teeth are quite narrow, and a proper weld and repair will make the tooth a lot stronger.
