SAREMCO lada niva aka Murphy's law
« on: February 03, 2016, 10:46:20 pm »
Hi there, here are some pictures and I found of Sacha,  my niva

I came to SA Jan 2013 5 months later I was a proud owner of a niva.
I really wanted a 4x4 as in Holland I used to have a diahatsu feroza and a suzuki SJ.
Although the niva wasn't in a good shape I couldn't let it go and bought it.
Sacha is a 2001 lada niva 1.7 carb sidekick. And the poor thing has been abused.
I didn't like the plastic on the niva so as soon as I arrived in hoedspruit I took it all of. I had the pleasure to do anti poaching work in hoedspruit bordering the greater kruger park.
It was great fun chasing the poachers in the niva and driving through the bush, but at the end it stuffed the niva badly and 6 months later I drove back to J'burg for different job oppertunity. I redone the engine with some help good (reg thanks)and bad (centurion "lada dealer") I drove the niva for another year and then I got myself a drollkever (i20). The niva stood still for almost a year. But last year November I started working on Sacha again but this time redo everything going full throttle. So far I got rid of all the rust and busy doing a full body respray, we busy redoing the whole engine, after that doing the suspension lifting the niva 40mm.
We planning to be done mid/end of winter so in spring we can play in the mug again.

I'll keep you posted with pictures

Welcome. Small world, and Hoedspruit is a small place. My son also worked there in the area for some time - he was involved in rebuilding the Brakspruit rail bridge , which washed away previously. If I remember correctly, they stayed over at a lodge in the Hoedspruit area, and the project was completed during 2012 or 2013. Maybe you stumbled over a couple of guys while they were rebuilding a bridge ?

Anyway, good luck with the Lada.

Hi danie,

Hoedspruit is a small town but can't recall meeting him. We where mostly involved with the antipoaching guys and game reserve guys. I was based outside hoedspruit at klaserie. Klaserie is so small it only a petrol station, pub and 5 houses. It's 23 km from hoedspruit. The pub klaserie one stop used to be popular under the airforce guys from mariepskop. Had some fun times there.

Although I was happy in the beginning, I have found some faults, it's still better then it used to be.
see below.

Biggest mistake is the corner of re front windscreen, there is a gap as it's to big. Fill it up with kit yes but it had could be prevented if measured right. Then tiny bubble at some spots. And because I was to lazy to strip it completely there are some spots that looks crap. Oh well we learn as we go.

Busy with the engine, found out pistons are "tired" as the mechanic says. There are chunks missing of the pistons. Then the inlet valves need to be changed. Re bore the cylinder bores place oversize Isuzu pistons, got them today they identical to the lada except they have 2 tails see pictures.

Crankshaft still good getting away with a polish.

part number of the Isuzu pistons if any are interested is: Isuzu G1617, P03.RPX46003.

Hi SARemco,

This is indeed very interesting. Those pistons and ring are very good quality. Just one question :

I might be wrong, but as far as I remember the Lada pistons have deeper grooves to allow space for the valves when it opens. Your picture of the Isuzu pistons is not that clear, and I can't see any grooves to allow space for the valves when it opens. Are you sure the pistons will not hit the valves when it opens ?

You will need to cut grooves in the pistons for the valves.

My Lada runs on grace from God, and breaks due to my failings.

Cutting grooves might be a bit risky, and might weaken the piston. It all depends on the thickness of the piston at the top.

Another point - the position (height) of the gudgeon pin needs to be exactly the same as the location of the pins at Lada pistons - otherwise major problems can occur.

P.S. By the way - cutting grooves at a piston is highly technical and complicated, and needs to be done by highly skilled specialists. This will be very expensive.
